Installing Ubuntu Server At first I installed Unraid on this server, but quickly decided that this was a very good “out of the box” solution, but I wanted more control, more FOSS, and more learning by doing. Ubuntu Server was a good middle man between unraid and something like barebones debian.
This was quick and easy using the offical Setup Guide
Then I set up some basic privacy measures based on the guide from Digital Ocean

The Plan I have the following goals for this home server.
Self host apps to replace apps I pay for or want to keep data private. (Google Drive/Photos, Github) Provide a VPN to my home network when needed. Provide a more powerful linux development box that I can remote into. Learn docker / networking / server security Do all of this securely without opening ports. These goals are fairly common in the self-hosted community (shout out to r/selfhosted and r/datahoarders).
